Supported by ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ through PAS, traditional dance groups remain available for performances, workshops, and educational activities.

Maceió, July 2, 2026 - The competitions have ended, the dance stages have been dismantled, and the grandstands have fallen silent. São João festivities may be over, but the work of the coco de roda groups supported by ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ through initiatives under the Socio-Urban Action Plan (PAS) continues year-round. Throughout the year, these groups are available to perform Alagoas' traditional folk dance at fairs, cultural festivals, corporate events, tourism receptions, school activities, and a variety of community and private celebrations.

"Coco de Roda Reviver" recently performed at the 14 ^th "Passa e Fica" Cultural Festival in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, highlighting Alagoas' cultural traditions beyond state borders with its performance Simplesmente Rosas (Simply Roses), which earned the group the championship title at the 4th Municipal Coco de Roda Competition in 2025.

According to Reviver President Roberto Calheiros, PAS support has enabled significant improvements to the group's structure. " We've grown tremendously, and that progress has allowed us to bring Alagoas' culture beyond our state's borders ," he said.

Passing on Tradition

After earning second place in the 5th Municipal Coco de Roda Competition, "Coco de Roda Pau de Arara" has performances scheduled through the end of August. Recognized by the cultural community as pioneers of contemporary coco , the group created the performance format now widely seen at festivals. "We introduced innovations to engage younger generations and expand coco culture in Maceió while preserving the authentic ³Ù°ù³Ü±èé tradition," explained Ivanaldo Júnior, the group's president.

"Pau de Arara" also offers workshops and open rehearsals where participants can learn traditional dance steps such as ³¦³ó¾±±è²¹±èá , quarenta rebatido , and cavalo manco , as well as introductory music education classes.

Professor Genivaldo Júnior, president of the Alagoas Coco de Roda League and of "Coco de Roda Los Coquitos," strongly believes in coco's educational significance. For him, investing in these cultural groups also means investing in young people. " Participating in rehearsals and becoming part of the network built within the group helps keep students engaged, away from idleness and the risks of the streets. Coco is much more than dancing, it's a shared experience, a passion, and an expression of our young people's love for their culture ," he said.

• Costume, musical instrument, and sound equipment rental or sales;
• Makeup workshops.

Culture within the PAS

By the end of the 2026 program cycle, PAS's Cultural Support Program will have supported a total of eighteen groups dedicated to preserving Popular and Afro-Brazilian cultural traditions. This initiative also helps organize a calendar of initiatives aimed at reviving traditional festivities in the neighborhoods of Chã da Jaqueira, Chã de Bebedouro, Bom Parto, Vila Saem, and Pinheiro.

The Social-Urban Action Plan is established under the Socio-Environmental Agreement, signed by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF) and ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½, with participation from the State Public Prosecutor's Office (MPE) and the Municipality of Maceió.
